Usfasgandu cannot be seized from us: Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has warned the police and the government that the Usfasgandu area cannot be seized from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) after returning to Male from his trip to New Zealand. Nasheed said “We will always be with the people” and “we will not back down like cowards”. He repeatedly stressed that the Usfasgandu area cannot be taken away from MDP.

In his short speech, Nasheed also stressed that a lot of important things are being discussed with the Commonwealth and that it is to facilitate a peaceful, free and fair election. “I am convinced that an election can be held before 2013” he said.

Nasheed said that the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) will investigate the transfer of power and that “those responsible for the coup will be arrested”.

“The whole Maldives will be saved from violence” he said in conclusion.

Police had concluded their search at Usfasgandu after the 48 hour court order period came to an end. The police had taken some items from the area as evidence.
