Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held a protest on Friday, calling for the release of former Maldives Police Service intelligence head, Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Hameed. The MDP rally was started from Usfasgandu in the evening, made a stop near Muliaage and ended at Usfasgandu at 10 pm.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed joined the rally from near Muliaage, but left sometime around sunset.
The police backed out a bit and aimed to use water cannons as MDP progressed in front of Medhuziyaaraiy. A handful of policemen approached former President Nasheed seemingly for a word but Nasheedâ™s security officials had pulled him away from the area as his gathered supporters became unruly. Nasheedâ™s security officials later took off with him.
Former National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal and former Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam had stated that police intelligence information had been included in the report of the events leading up to the transfer of power on February 7 published by the two prominent members of MDP.
Police is currently investigating the case of the leaked intelligence information. Hameed has been arrested for leaking confidential information as MDP calls for his release.
