Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza has stressed that President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik had waived the duty from the laptops and other items brought in by Malaysia's Nexbiz Limited assigned with the establishment of the border control system, as there had been 'no legal restrictions.' As the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has alleged corruption in the lucrative MVR500 million border control system project, the government had informed the Finance Ministry of the decision to waive the duty for the items brought in for the project on May 7.
Abbas further added that the decision to exempt the duty for the items brought in by Nexbiz Limited for the project had been made after the issue had been assessed by the legal officials of the Presidentâ™s Office. He also said when President Waheed had waived the duty for the items, the court order related to the border control system had not been issued, while adding that the government must respect the agreement made with Nexbiz Limited.
âœIt would have been an issue if the Court order had existed at the time,â Abbas said.
The High Court had ordered the project be temporarily ceased on May 10.
While the awarding of the establishment of the border control system has been laden with accusations of corruption, ACC is currently investigating the laptops brought in by Nexbiz allegedly for the project.
