Notion to nominate Didi as Health Minister to Jumhoory Party Council

The nomination of Dr Ibrahim Didi who was elected as the President of pro-government Jumhoory Party last night, has been proposed to the sit-down of the party's Council for the post of Health Minister. The notion had been proposed to last night’s meeting by the Deputy leader of Jumhoory Party and Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir. But divergence of opinion with Council member Fuad Gasim over the matter saw both members walking out of the meeting.

Jabir speaking to Haveeru today claimed that no documentation indicated that the present Health Minister Dr Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed was at the post in a slot for Jumhoory Party. He added that Jamsheed was not a member of the party.

“Dr Didi is a seasoned professional in the health sector. I believe that he is the ideal candidate for the post as the need to develop the health sector is paramount. Furthermore, Didi has already displayed his competence and capability in the cabinet,” Jabir detailed.

He further claimed that the notion had been submitted to be taken up with President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, by party leader and Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim. Jabir said that the Council was in support of Dr Didi while the newly elected party President himself had not opposed to the notion.

“On principle, dialogue within the coalition has been assigned to the party leader. Hence the party leader would take this matter to the President for a decision. I saw that the Council was in full support of this notion,” Jabir said.

However, when asked if Fuad had walked out following the divergence of opinion over the matter, Jabir stressed that “such differences were to be expected” and was not a major issue. More importantly, the majority of the Council was in favor of nominating Dr Didi for the Health Minister’s post, he added.

During last night’s meeting, Fuad had mainly pointed out that if Dr Jamsheed is replaced by a Minister of former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration, it could undermine the harmony within the coalition.

Spokesperson and Council member of Jumhoory Party Moosa Rameez claimed that Dr Jamsheed was not occupying a cabinet post designated for the party. He added that the party leader must request the President to secure government posts for the party.

“That’s something that has been left for the party leader. Hence the leader would take such matters forward,” Moosa detailed.
