Police leave Usfasgandu after search

Police have left the Usfasgandu area this afternoon after claiming that the search of the area had been completed for the time being. Police media official revealed that they had collected the necessary evidence during the search of the site which began yesterday morning.  Police website stated that during the search which commenced at 8.00 yesterday morning sanctioned by an order of the Criminal Court had ended at 2.00 this afternoon where evidence of criminal offences that had taken place in the area had been gathered.

Police had been given 48 hours by the Criminal Court to conduct the search of Usfasgandu.

Various items had been confiscated by the Police during their search of the Usfasgandu area which had been leased to the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to carry out its political activities by the Male City Council till the end of next month.

The items confiscated by the police included a box of condoms, aluminum foil believed to be used for drug abuse and some iron pipes. MDP supporters had gathered near the area and protested while the Police were conducting the search. Several had been arrested and many others injured as police clashed with MDP supporters.

Police had also attempted to dismantle the places constructed by MDP at the site. However, all attempts to take apart Usfasgandu had been ceased following a temporary stay order by the Civil Court last night. But most parts had already been dismantled by the time the Civil Court had issued the order.
