Political parties integral in assuring rights of the people: Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has alleged that the rights of the people were being undermined despite such rights being set down in the constitution. Nasheed further stressed that the people's rights can only be protected by the efforts of political parties. Speaking during a workshop conducted to strengthen the structure of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Nasheed detailed that the rights of the people would be assured by the proper functioning of a political party and its efforts to protect such rights.

Referring to his MDP, Nasheed claimed that the present rights enjoyed by the people even under the old constitution were down to the efforts of a political party.

“First when the registration of a political party was proposed, the old constitution did not allow for it. But after much debate and effort were we able to achieve that. The point I want to highlight is that, the rights of the people are not assured or protected just because it is written down in the constitution,” he added.

“The rights of the people can only be secured through the efforts of a properly functioning political party.”

Nasheed further noted that in his view the foremost role in assuring and protecting the rights of the people was played by political parties. In addition, the former President stressed that the support of the people cannot be achieved by intimidation or deceit.

“We don’t want to secure the backing of the people through intimidation or trickery. Our wish is to learn the needs of the people, to draft policies in line with those needs, propose the policies to the people and then establish a government by the votes of the people,” Nasheed said.
