Approved airport master plan doesn't mean other permits can be avoided: MACL

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) today stated that the government approval of the master plan proposed by GMR to develop Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) does not mean that the necessary permits can be avoided. MACL Managing Director Mohamed Ibrahim said that even if the master plan had been sanctioned by the government, any infrastructure work at the airport must carry permission from the Civil Aviation Authority.

“Housing Ministry grants permission based on the structure of the building. That doesn’t mean that the Civil Aviation Ministry permit can be avoided. The permission cannot be given by MACL either,” he said.

Mohamed Ibrahim said that prior permission had been taken for any structural changes to the airport from the authority even previously.

“There are inspections being carried out as it is an airport. The permission is given upon considering these details,” he said.

However, GMR’s CEO Andrew Harrison refuted the claims by stressing that the new terminal had been included in the approved master plan by both the government and the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

Henceforth, Harrison detailed that there were no issues to moving forward with the work on the terminal, while adding that it had also been sanctioned by the Housing Ministry.

He stressed that any changes to the airport, not included in the original master plan would duly be informed to the Civil Aviation Authority.

Transport Minister Ahmed Shamheed on Saturday alleged that INIA operator GMR, India had begun the construction of the new terminal without prior approval of the Civil Aviation Authority, while claiming that a course of action in that regard would be decided within this week.
