A huge explosion at a liquid gas reservoir in Kabul triggered a huge fire on Wednesday, killing at least two people and injuring up to 62 others, an health official said. "Two people have been killed and more than 62 others injured in the explosion and fire", health ministry spokesman Kargar Nor Ughli told AFP.
Many of the victims were taken to hospital with severe burns and twenty of them were in a serious condition he added, warning that the death toll could rise.
Thick black smoke and flames could be seen rising from a warehouse on the site on Kabul Jalalabad road as dozens of fire fighters tried to put out the flames and ambulances evacuated the wounded.
It was not immediately clear what had caused the deadly explosion but Afghan interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said initial investigations had ruled out the possibility of any terrorist involvement.
A western security source told AFP that an electrical fault may have been the cause.
It was the second incident of its kind over the past two days in Kabul. On Tuesday a market caught fire, leaving three people dead and 28 others injured.
