High Court has asked Police to launch an investigation into the allegations filed with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) that the Chief Judge of the High Court Ahmed Shareef had met with officials of the Malaysian Company Nexbis in Bangkok assigned to install the Border Control System. A press statement by High Court yesterday detailed that the Police had been asked to launch an extensive investigation into the allegations made against Judge Shareef. It further added that the case had been filed with the Police in order to determine the legitimacy behind the accusations as soon as possible.
The statement had also responded to the letter sent to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) signed by seven High Court Judges against the Chief Judge Shareef. To that end, the statement detailed that the issues highlighted in the said letter were within the authority of the Chief Judge and noted that the grievances had been raised after divergences of opinion over the true sense of the courtâ™s general assembly.
In relation to the letter sent to the ACC that Shareef was attempting to influence the Nexbis case, High Court in the statement stressed that an individual Judge cannot sway any case at the High Court.
âœThe High Court wishes to inform that no individual Judge can simply influence a decision of the Court as all cases at the High Court are presided by a minimum three Judges bench and a ruling is only made by the majority of a particular bench,â statement read.
âœAlso no other Judges would partake in the discussions to deliver a verdict on a case except the constituted bench for the respective case. High Court believes the accusations made in the letter contrary to the truth, is an extremely irresponsible act with intentions to deceive and manipulate the truth.â
The statement also countered the ACCâ™s claims that the case against Judge Shareef was being probed, highlighting conflict of interest as the ACC was investigating a matter related to the case that had been filed at the Court by ACC itself.
High Court also expressed disappointment that the letter sent to the ACC had revealed internal details of the court in a manner that was far from the truth.
