Will not vote to approve any ministers: Alhan

Feydhoo constituency MP and member of Jumhoory Party (JP) Alhan Fahmy has said that he would not vote to approve four ministers nominated by President Mohamed Waheed Hassa Manik at the parliament sitting today citing doubt over the legitimacy of the government. The Government Accountability Committee of the Parliament assessing the four Ministers had only approved Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed as the Gender Minister, while Housing Minister Mohamed Muizzu, Health Minister Dr Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed and Environment Minister Dr Mariyam Shakeela had not received the approval of the Committee.

Alhan who had formerly been a member and Vice President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said that he would not participate in the vote to approve the four ministers because of doubts he harboured regarding the legitimacy of President Waheed’s government.

“I will not vote for them because I have doubts about the legitimacy of this government. I won’t vote because the Commission of National Inquiry has not issued a definitive statement. Because from my investigation, it seems this government had come to power from a coup. I was appointed to this position through a legitimate election and anyone appointed to a position through a legitimate election will not vote for anyone nominated as a minister for this government,” he said.

When asked what course of action he would take if JP’s parliamentary group was to issue a whip line on the matter he said that he would “break the party’s whip line.”
He also clarified that JP’s parliamentary group has not so far reached a decision on the matter either.

During the Committee meeting Alhan Fahmy had voted against Dr Muizzu, Dr Jamsheed and Dr Shakeela.

When the vote on granting approval for Dhiyana had ended all square, she was approved by the vote of the Chair of the Committee Hanimaadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Mujuthaz. However, Alhan had not participated in that vote.

Meanwhile, some members of Jumhoory Party have proposed to appoint party President Dr Ibrahim Didi as the Health Minister.

However, Alhan had earlier on June 3 stated at the ceremony held for signing up for JP at Traders Hotel that the government did not change through a coup in reply to a question asked by a reporter, and that he’s not saying so because he’s “changed his colour.”
 
He later defended his words claiming that what he meant was that then Vice President Waheed had assumed office of President following former President Nasheed’s resignation as per the constitution of the Maldives and that it should be accepted that “it was a resignation,” he said.
