The government after deciding to mark the World Environment Day next Tuesday by banning motorists and forcing them to be on foot for six hours has now postponed the event to Friday. Environmental Analyst of the Environment Minister Mohamed Hassan the decision to postpone the ban on the use of vehicles throughout the Maldives from 4.00 in the evening till 10.00 in the night to Friday had been taken in light of various reasons.
âœAs tomorrow is an official working day it would prove difficult for many people and it would be difficult to hold activities as well, which is why it has been postponed,â Hassan added.
He further detailed that activity to mark the environment day which would be held tomorrow morning at the Villimale Ferry Terminal area would go ahead as scheduled.
However, the recycled items exhibition scheduled to be held in the Artificial Beach area has also been postponed for Friday, he added.
A notice by the Transport Authority issued earlier had stated that vehicles carrying departure passengers and other vehicles not included in the ban would be issued a special permit from the Authority.
The notice further detailed that even during the time period, ambulances, vehicles of the security forces, special needs peopleâ™s vehicles and permitted public transport vehicles would be allowed to remain operational.
Transport Authority also warned a MVR750 fine for those who do not comply with the notice under Article 65 of the Transportation Act.
