President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik claimed today that the intimation of the current political situation in the Maldives have gained the sympathy of many in the government of the United Kingdom. âœThatâ™s why Iâ™m certain that all their concerns would be allayed during this visit,â President said speaking to reporters prior to departing to the United Kingdom to join in Queen Elizabeth II diamond jubilee celebrations.
He further expressed confidence that he would have the opportunity to share the political situation in the Maldives with the Prime Minister and other prominent officials of the UK during the visit.
In addition to the political state of affairs, the visit would facilitate the opportunity to relay the economic situation with leaders of UK and other Commonwealth countries, President added.
Only around 30 people had been gathered to bid farewell to the President for his inaugural visit to the UK since assuming office on February 7, despite efforts by pro-government political parties using loud speakers on the streets of Male last night urging supporters to gather near the pier at 9.00 this morning.
While President Waheed has departed to UK, the country is known to have excellent relations with former President Mohamed Nasheed and opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
