Former President Mohamed Nasheed has claimed that he had asked the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) set up to probe the circumstances surrounding the transfer of power on February 7 to check the bank accounts of the people believed to have been bribed to bring about the 'coup.' Speaking to reporters during the lunch break after he was summoned to the CNI today, Nasheed revealed that he had asked members of the CNI to probe the bank accounts of Jumhoory Party leader Gasim Ibrahim and the generals, officers of the military and police who are believed to have been bribed to bring about the â˜coup.â™ In addition, the former President said that he had requested CNI to review the phone calls of his predecessor Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and any others who may have been involved.
âœThey told me that they would do so,â Nasheed added after spending almost three hours inside the CNI.
Nasheed further stressed that there was no fear of the security forces and relaying information to the CNI was a national duty.
âœNeither the military nor the police can stymie this process. The people, the military and police of the Maldives are now wide awake,â he said.
In reference to the rumors that members of the security forces are prevented from giving their respective statements to the CNI investigation, Nasheed said it was just an excuse as they âœhave just gone along with the coup.â
âœThis is not the time to be afraid. This is the time to come forth and liberate the nation with everything that we have,â he added.
The former President also stressed that he had not consulted any officers of the military or the police in relation to the statements being given to the commission. âœI hadnâ™t even spoken to members of my security detail in relation to the matter.â
After refusing to disclose the details of his statement to the CNI, Nasheed said that he would share the information provided to the Commission with the people later.
