I'm ready to face accusations even at Speaker's house: Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that he is ready to answer the accusations of illegal activities carried out during his term at office raised against him. After concluding his trip to the US, speaking to reporters at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA), Nasheed stressed that he did not commit any crimes during his term as President and that he had told the Parliament speaker Abdulla Shahid that he is willing to answer the accusations put forward as a resolution even at the Parliament Speaker Abdulla Shahid’s residence if necessary.

He said that he is ready to present himself at the parliament to answer to the accusations.

“I have always been ready to answer. I can answer. Anything I did, was done for the sake of the people. I have facilitated the needs of the people at the time in accordance to the principles of the law and the general guidelines.” Nasheed said.

Nasheed said that he does not fear resolutions being submitted to the Parliament against him and that he would not flee in fear.

Nasheed said that the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the police had tried to investigate accusations in several ways.

“I have not touched anyone’s money. I have not given grief to anyone or violated anyone’s rights. I have not done anything of the sort,” Nasheed said.

Nasheed said that the politicians have always tried to defeat him through means other than votes. He said that he is being targeted without the representation of the people and through a ‘coup’ or other means to weaken him.

“We will clearly win in the first round (of the elections)” Nasheed said.

Nasheed said that the police and armed forces are aware of the importance of sharing their perspective of the true details of the events of February 7 and that the people are now more aware than before that anyone who provides their testimonies cannot be intimidated.

Nasheed’s trip to the US was to receive the James Lawson award given by Boston University upon his achievement in the Practice of Nonviolent Action and Political Reform. He also gave a speech about peace and gave an interview to CNN to the program hosted by Fareed Zakariyya.

In his speech, former President highlighted upon the situation in Maldives and stressed on the importance of holding early elections. In this regard he also discussed on an independent and impartial inquiry in to the transfer of power.
