PPM odds on to win polls in the first round: Yamin

Pro-government Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group leader and Mulak constituency MP Abdulla Yamin has claimed that the party is most likely to win the 2013 presidential elections in the first round. In an interview with Haveeru last night, Yamin stressed that out of all the political parties in the Maldives, PPM is odds on to win the presidential polls in the first round.

“I would say that PPM is most likely to win an election without a coalition. But PPM must declare a suitable and generally accepted presidential candidate. Then we can certainly avoid a second round, and win the polls in the first round itself,” said Yamin who has been proclaimed by some as the front runner for PPM’s presidential candidate for the next election.

However, PPM is yet to announce a presidential candidate and the party’s presidential primary has been scheduled for February of next year.

Yamin also claimed that opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) would lose out in the polls if their presidential candidate and former President Mohamed Nasheed contests in the election.

To that end, he predicted that most people would not vote for Nasheed.

Nasheed himself, has stressed that MDP would win the elections without forming a coalition citing that the people did not wish to blend the views of other political parties into MDP.
