During the first five months of this year, tourist arrivals in the Maldives have hit the 400,000 mark. Statistics from the Tourism Ministry show that a total of 398,689 tourists had arrived in the Maldives during the first five months of the year. In comparison with the same period last year, the figure was at 392,020.
However the influx in tourist arrivals was recorded only in January where 96,146 were recorded while the same month last year saw 79,493 tourists visit the Maldives. The remaining months of this year had recorded slightly lower figures when compared with the same months of last year.
According to statistics, tourist arrivals in Maldives in 2010 were 791,917 but the total had risen to 931,333 in 2011. Tourism Ministry is currently engaged in efforts to hit the one million mark by the end of this year.
In previous years most tourists arrived in the Maldives from Europe, but the numbers had gradually receded following the economic crisis in the region.
