Nasheed's government planned to stage massacre: Abbas

Jumhoory Party (JP) council member and government spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza has alleged that former President Mohamed Nasheed, his government and supporters of his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had planned to carry out a "massacre" on the night of February 6. Speaking at a meeting held by JP at Kaafu Atoll Dhihfushi last night Abbas said that the “massacre” was to be carried out by the supporters of Nasheed who were provided with weapons along with the aid of the Police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), but that the plan had failed as many from within the Police and MNDF who loved their nation opposed the plan and stopped Nasheed’s armed supporters.

“They had a devious plan behind carrying out the massacre. It was to create a state of national emergency, abolish the courts and render powerless the constitution of the Maldives. What could be a bigger coup than this?” he asked.

Abbas said that the events of the night of February 6 should be investigated in a similar manner as February 8, and that as many as possible should provide their testimonies on the events of February 6 to the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI).

Responding to the statement of MDP’s parliamentary group leader Ibrahim ‘Ibu’ Mohamed Solih’s words during a meeting held by the party to mark MDP’s seventh anniversary at Usfasgandu Abbas said that while Ibu claims that they are not wealthy he himself divulges in several trades.

“Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that they are not businessmen. We don’t have the money to buy off members. We do not get things done by paying people,” Abbas relayed.

He claimed that Ibrahim Mohamed Solih himself comes from a wealthy background from a family indulging in several businesses.

At the meeting which was attended by JP’s Leader and Presidential candidate Gasim Ibrahim and JP’s President Dr Ibrahim Didi, one of the Deputy Leaders of JP Abdulla Jabir said that JP’s ideology is to make the people wealthier and that Nasheed’s government had destroyed the economy of the Maldives.
